While it is true that generally higher castes have higher steppe ancestry, Initial caste differentiation was based on class and occupation. Many people think that a race of steppe pastoralist invaded India and subdued the locals and became the higher castes. It had nothing to do with ethnicity or facial features. It was a term used to refer to the Indian nobility i.e, the Kings (Kshatriyas) and Priests (Brahmins). Aryan in the Indian cultural context meant ‘noble’.
